Gran Sasso or the big rock, is a place of contrasts:  on one side an enormous high plain, that has the nickname “little tibet”, and on the other side, soaring hundreds of metres, amazing rock faces.  This excursion unites the love of mountains, their peaks, their valleys and the people who live amongst them.  This is a vacation for people who love adventure and the strong emotions it brings to their lives.

Marche / Lazio / Abruzzo:  the big Apennine trek

We’ll take you to the most spectacular tract of the Apennine mountain range.  It is suitable only for those without fear of steep climbs and long hours of hiking.  We’ll have 9 days to span the sibylline peaks, hiking down along the forested sides that will lead us all the way to Gran Sasso.  This trek is an incredible adventure.  If steep climbs and high elevations do not scare you, and if you want to experience the apennine mountains in their most authentic and profound setting, and if sleeping under the constellations fills your heart with joy, then join us for this once in a lifetime adventure!

 

The backpack scale of difficulty



Indicates easy excursions, that are suitable for people of all fitness levels, as they do not involve steep hikes. Generally speaking they last from 4 to 5 hours including breaks.



Excursions on well marked trails, with moderate differences in elevations from top to bottom.  Reasonable level of fitness and stamina required on these excursions due to their average time of between 5 and 6 hours.



Long excursions of not less than 6 hours in length, that could involve overnight stays in tents or at mountain retreats.  You will encounter noticeable differences in elevations and varying types of terrain, at times quite steep.  Anyone choosing this type of excursion must be in very good physical shape and have good stamina.



Challenging treks that last more than one day and require overnight stays in tents.  Elevation levels from start to finish will vary greatly.  Along with being in extremely good shape, you will also need to possess a spirit of adventure.  The length of these treks per day is not less than 7 or 8 hours.

When planning a Trekking à la Carte holiday, always remember that along with your ever present backpack and comfortable, well broken in hiking boots, you’ll need to pack clothing according to the season and the type of excursion you have chosen.  Also keep in mind that you should never start out without a bottle of water, a change of clothes if necessary, and a water-proof jacket.

Abruzzo:  mount Maiella

HIKING TOURS

These excursions require that you are in good physical shape and have excellent stamina, because each hike will last up to 6 hours. They differ from the walking tours as there are notable changes in the elevation the trail will take from start to finish. As always, a durable backpack is an absolute necessity. On these tours you could also find yourself alternating between traveling on foot, mountain bike or even snowshoes. We have also included many other extra activities to allow you to totally immerse yourself in a relaxing vacation.

TREKKING


These exciting excursions have been designed for people in excellent physical shape and stamina, and who already have experience in mountain hiking.  The elevation changes throughout the treks will be challenging and their overall length will be not less than 6 hours.  On these adventure filled excursions you will be walking with backpacks for perhaps a full day, and if necessary  sleeping overnight in tents or at mountain refuges (in which case a maximum of only 10 people per trek is possible).
